VIDEO MESSAGE FROM
Y.A.B. DATO’ SERI DR. MAHATHIR MOHAMAD
PRIME MINISTER OF MALAYSIA

ON THE LAUNCH OF COCA-COLA/UNDP E-LEARNING PROGRAM IN MALAYSIA

MARCH 6, 2002

It gives me great pleasure to congratulate the United Nations Development Program and The Coca-Cola Company on the launch today of this exciting e-learning initiative in Malaysia.

I am delighted that the UNDP and Coca-Cola have selected Malaysia as the first country in the world to launch this project and partnership.

Bridging the information and knowledge gap – not just between Malaysia and other nations, but between local communities in Malaysia itself – is an extremely important priority for us all as we move into the new global knowledge economy.

Partnership is crucial, which is why this project is being implemented in close collaboration with the Government through the Ministry of Education.

The project is going to empower a great number of our students and teachers in making the journey into the Information Age. In doing so, it’s also going to help the whole country’s march towards a knowledge-based economy.

I therefore commend this latest example of Coca-Cola’s commitment to corporate citizenship. Coca-Cola’s leadership in helping to promote IT education in Malaysia and across Asia serves I think as a role model for other companies to follow. This project will also clearly benefit from the guidance and experience of the UNDP – a world leader in using ICT to drive education and development.

Again, my heartfelt thanks to the UNDP and The Coca-Cola Company for launching this innovative and timely initiative. I have every confidence that it will be a great success and will help many, many Malaysians to grasp the opportunities of the emerging Information Age.
